In Uganda, Mgahinga National Park is the best park to trek the Golden Monkeys. Uganda Wildlife Authority directorate of Conservation has completed the process of habituating a family of Golden monkeys for experiential tourism as a strategy to diversify tourism activities within Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. It is now possible for clients to stay with the monkeys for four hours. The product is now ready for the market, according to UWA management. Golden Monkey Habituation experience permit cost USD 100 and can be booked at Uganda Wildlife Authority head office.

The maximum number per visiting group per day will be 6 people who can see these monkeys either in the morning or afternoon. The activity takes place in the morning and afternoon and lasts an average of four hours each session. The golden monkey habituation is guided by scientific researches. Bookings are done at both headquarters and the national park offices in Kisoro and Ntebeko. One must keep in mind that the beautiful monkeys only exist in the bamboo forest of the Virunga Volcanoes and you have to be in reasonable fit to hike up to their habitat which is the most rewarding experience.

After breakfast transfer to Mgahinga National Park headquarters for briefing about golden monkeys and the forest. Accompanied together with researchers you will have a unique chance to get close to these little beautiful primates and study their behaviour in their natural habitat. The intimate golden monkey experience allows you a minimum 4 hours in the presence of a golden monkey family. Since regular permits allow 1 hour, this is 4 times the amount of time spent up-close with the golden monkeys. During this time you will be able to experience the golden monkey family as they jump from tree to tree, eating, fighting among others. Drive to the misty and thick Bwindi Impenetrable National Park best known for its mountain gorilla population and gorillas trekking.  Uganda has two places where these mountain gorillas may be seen, one is Mgahinga National Park, a stunning park and a component of the Virunga chain of towering volcanoes that extend into DRC and Rwanda, and then Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.

If you book a Uganda safari without gorilla trekking, then you will have missed an opportunity to see these rare and threatened gorillas. A gorilla trek is a highlight of all visits done in Uganda and certainly mountain gorillas are the major reason as to why very many travelers visit Uganda.  Gorilla trekking is limited to a maximum of 8 people per particular gorilla group per day. Permits must be booked in advance because they are on a very high demand all year round.

After an early morning breakfast, you drive to the park headquarters for registration and joining others for a gorilla trekking briefing about the etiquette’s of the gorillas and the park. Once this is done, your guides will lead you and trek through thick creepers and undergrowth in search for the gorillas which can take from 2 to 8 hours depending on the location of mountain gorillas. For those who aren’t fit enough, we advise you to go with a porter who will help you carry your backpacker to erase the difficulties of the potentially strenuous trek.

Once a habituated gorilla family has been located by your guides, you can settle down for an hour to watch and observe them as they feed and groom while their babies tumble about the undergrowth. Sitting only for a few metres from a gorilla and looking into brown eyes of a mountain gorilla, is a thrilling experience not easily forgotten on a Uganda Safari. Rwanda gorilla permit cost 1500 USD per person per day and Virunga National Park in Congo cost 400 USD per person. Gorilla’s permits for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) on a fast come first serve basis.
